Chapter 7: A Sister’s Sanctuary

Back at the penthouse, Clara stood by the large bay window, watching the distant afternoon traffic wind its way through the concrete canyons of the city. For the first time in three years, she felt a profound sense of peace settling deep into her bones. The phantom weight that had constantly pressed against her chest—the fear of the next angry outburst, the anxiety of hiding the bruises, the constant walking on eggshells—was finally gone. Dr. Elizabeth had visited again an hour earlier, confirming that both Clara and the baby were recovering remarkably well from the physical and emotional shock of the ordeal. Clara gently placed her hand on her abdomen, feeling a soft, reassuring flutter from within. It was a poignant reminder that she was not alone, that a new life was growing inside her, untouched by the darkness of her past marriage. The heavy oak door of the suite opened softly, and Marcus walked in, loosening his silk tie as he exhaled a long breath of exhaustion. He saw Clara standing by the window and smiled gently, walking over to join her in the quiet space. “How are you holding up, little sister?” he asked softly, using the same affectionate diminutive he had used in the hotel lobby.
Clara turned to him, her eyes bright with unshed tears of gratitude. “I feel like I’ve woken up from a very long, very dark nightmare, Marcus,” she answered, her voice steady and clear. “I was so afraid to leave, so convinced that I couldn't survive on my own, but being here... seeing how quickly that fragile world fell apart... I realize how strong I actually am.” Marcus put his arm around her shoulders, pulling her close in a warm, protective embrace. “You were always strong, Clara. You just forgot your own power because you were forced to survive a monster who fed on your doubts.” He paused, looking down at her with a serious expression. “Julian tried to have his lawyers contact mine an hour ago. He wants to negotiate a settlement, offering a fraction of what he owes you in exchange for dropping the fraud charges and the restraining order.” Clara didn't hesitate for a second. Her gaze hardened with a resolve that matched her brother’s. “Tell him there’s nothing to negotiate,” she said firmly. “I want a full, uncontested divorce, full custody of our child when they are born, and I want every single illegal asset he hid investigated to the fullest extent of the law. I am not backing down, Marcus.” Marcus smiled, a deep, genuine expression of pride lighting up his face. “That’s my sister,” he said softly. “Consider it done.”
