Chapter 14: The Final Audit

Two years after the events in the hangar, the federal investigation into the Vance Defense Group was officially closed, resulting in sweeping regulatory reforms across the entire defense contracting sector. The corporate assets had been completely liquidated, with the proceeds placed into a permanent trust fund managed by the Guardian Trust to support the families of fallen service members and veterans suffering from combat-related trauma.
Alia Morgan sat at her desk in the Guardian Trust headquarters in Washington, reviewing the final financial audit report submitted by the Department of Justice. The numbers were clean, transparent, and verified by independent federal inspectors. The era of ghost battalions, fabricated casualty lists, and stolen valor had been systematically dismantled and replaced by stringent accountability and unwavering oversight.
Elena Vance knocked softly on the open office door before stepping inside, holding a fresh cup of coffee and a thick file labeled Operation Iron Veil: Final Reconciliation.
"The last of the educational trust funds for the children of the fallen soldiers has been fully endowed," Elena reported, her expression serene and fulfilled. "Every family has received their full benefits, and the memorial wall at Bethesda has been permanently dedicated by the Secretary of Defense."
Alia looked up from her paperwork, taking the coffee cup with a warm smile. "We finally finished the mission, Elena."
"We did," Elena agreed, pulling up a chair beside the desk. "It’s strange to think about where we were two years ago. That night in the hangar... it feels like another lifetime."
"It was another lifetime," Alia said quietly. "We lived in a world built on lies and shiny illusions. Now we live in reality. It’s harder, but it’s real."
"What's next for you, Captain?" Elena asked, looking at Alia with deep admiration. "Are you going to stay with the Trust, or are you looking at returning to active duty?"

Alia looked out the window at the Washington Monument rising proudly against the clear blue sky. The uniform hanging in her closet was clean, pressed, and heavy with real medals earned through blood, endurance, and uncompromising truth.
"My service never really ended, Elena," Alia said softly. "Whether I'm wearing the uniform in the field or advocating for the truth in the capital, the mission is always the same: protect the people who can't protect themselves, and never let anyone turn a soldier's sacrifice into an ash heap."
