Chapter 7: The Confrontation in the Stacks

The footsteps stopped directly outside the frosted glass door of the private research alcove. Elena froze, her hand instinctively reaching down to touch the blue Halyyon folder resting on the floor beside her chair. Marcus cursed under his breath, sliding the air-gapped laptop into his battered canvas messenger bag and grabbing a heavy brass paperweight from the desk. "Stay behind the shelving," Marcus whispered, his voice taut with adrenaline. The brass doorknob turned slowly, clicking with a muffled mechanical snap, and the door swung open. A man in a tailored gray suit stepped into the room—not one of Arthur’s street thugs, but corporate counsel associate Richard Vance, Arthur’s nephew and legal pit bull. Richard adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, offering a cold, artificial smile that failed to reach his eyes. "Well, well, well. Mrs. Sterling, and disgraced Mr. Reed. What a charming little reunion of federal offenses," Richard said smoothly, stepping further into the cramped room while two burly security guards blocked the exit behind him. Marcus stepped in front of Elena, raising the brass paperweight. "Back off, Richard. The files are already backed up on three separate federal servers. You're too late." Richard chuckled, a dry, dismissive sound, and pulled a sleek smartphone from his breast pocket, tapping the screen to display a live-streamed feed of a remote server terminal. "You amateur journalists always assume your air-gapped laptops are truly isolated, Mr. Reed. Our malware was embedded in the Halyyon folder the moment your source downloaded it from the cloud. We’ve already scrubbed the remote servers and locked your local drives with a military-grade cryptographic key." Elena felt a cold wave of dread wash over her, but she forced her breathing to remain even and controlled. She remembered the video prompt, the moment of disciplined restraint when the world seemed to collapse around her. She did not panic. She did not scream. Instead, she stood up slowly from her chair, her mustard yellow silk blouse catching the harsh fluorescent light of the alcove. "You’re very thorough, Richard," Elena said, her voice eerily calm as she stepped out from behind Marcus. "Arthur taught you well. But you made one critical mistake." Richard raised an eyebrow, his smug expression wavering slightly under her intense, unblinking gaze. "Oh? And what might that be, Elena?" Elena smiled, a cold, calculated expression that mirrored the one she had given Julian in the penthouse. "You assumed I only trusted the digital files." With a swift, fluid motion, she reached into the lining of her heavy wool coat and pulled out a pristine, physical microcassette recorder, clicking the play button. The crystal-clear audio of Arthur Vance and Julian discussing the illegal human trials echoed off the stone walls of the library alcove. Richard’s face instantly drained of all color, his smug composure shattering into pure panic as he realized the physical tape could not be deleted by malware.
