Chapter 13: Laying New Timbers

The next two weeks on Oakridge Avenue transformed from a stressful construction headache into an inspiring restoration project. With Margaret officially joining as a co-partner in the property's legal and historical rebirth, the tone of the entire site shifted dramatically. The heavy tension that had hung in the air since day one was replaced by a collaborative spirit of shared history and mutual respect.

Arthur stood near the newly reinforced framing studs, checking the level of a load-bearing header with a digital tool while Elena reviewed updated material orders on her clipboard. The morning sunlight poured unobstructed through the open wall, warming the polished subfloor where the old living room used to be.

"Header is dead-on, Elena," Arthur called out, lowering his tool and wiping his brow with a cloth. "The framing inspector signed off on the structural adjustments an hour ago. We're officially clear to start closing up the exterior perimeter next week."

Elena walked over, looking up at the sturdy new Douglas fir beams that Arthur's crew had meticulously installed to replace the rotted timber. "It looks strong," she said, her voice filled with quiet satisfaction. "It looks like it could stand for another hundred years."

"That's the goal," Arthur replied, smiling beneath his hard hat. "We used triple-laminated support posts this time. Even if someone tries to tear this place down fifty years from now, they're going to need a lot more than a sledgehammer."

Margaret visited the site frequently, often bringing homemade lemonade and old photo albums to share with Arthur and Elena during lunch breaks. She walked through the skeletal frame of the house with a serene smile, pointing out where her uncle Julian used to garden before the property was stolen. The bitterness that had once defined her family's history had completely dissolved, replaced by a healing sense of restoration.

Elena realized that her career in corporate real estate—once the entire focus of her existence—now felt hollow compared to the tangible, meaningful work happening right here on this gravel yard. She had spent years chasing artificial success, blind to the foundation of integrity beneath her feet. Now, standing among the sawdust and framing studs, she felt truly grounded for the first time in her adult life.
