Chapter 2: Shadows of the Underbelly

The servant’s staircase smelled of damp concrete, old copper pipes, and forgotten history. Elena kept her steps light, her rubber-gloved hands gently guiding Toby along the descending steps. The boy was shivering violently, the adrenaline of his escape beginning to fade, leaving behind a profound, bone-deep exhaustion. Elena unzipped her grey uniform jacket, wrapping it around Toby’s thin shoulders over his blue patterned pajamas. It was far too large for him, swallowing his small frame, but it provided warmth and a semblance of safety. They reached the basement level, a vast subterranean maze of laundry rooms, boiler chambers, and storage vaults that mirrored the opulence above in sheer scale, though entirely stripped of its glamour.
Toby looked up at her, his big eyes reflecting the flickering amber glow of the emergency overhead bulb. He whispered, his voice cracking, that his father had locked him away because he saw something he wasn't supposed to see in the study. Elena knelt down, her face softening despite the lingering panic in her chest. She gently brushed a lock of matted hair from his forehead, promising him that no one would ever put him back in that dark metal box. She remembered the heavy black padlock she had pried open with the master maintenance key she kept hidden in her pocket. It was a lock meant for industrial security, not for a seven-year-old child. The realization fueled a quiet, steady determination within her. The Vances thought they owned the world, but they had underestimated the quiet resilience of the people who cleaned up their messes.
Navigating the basement corridors required intimate knowledge of the estate’s architectural quirks. Elena knew that the main security office on this level fed directly into the local police precinct’s silent alarm system, but it also recorded every movement within the house on analog tapes. If she could secure those tapes, she would have irrefutable proof of the abuse and confinement. However, Julian Vance was not a man to leave loose ends untied. Even now, the heavy thump of footsteps overhead indicated that he was descending from the upper floor, likely searching for them. Elena pulled Toby behind a row of heavy laundry sorting bins just as the metal service door at the far end of the corridor creaked open, casting a long, menacing shadow across the concrete floor.
