Chapter 10: The Unraveling

Dawn broke over Manhattan, casting a bruised purple light across the skyline as Julian strode into the federal courthouse downtown. Marcus Vance and two armed federal marshals flanked him, carrying heavy banker's boxes stuffed with the documents retrieved from the estate vault. Within minutes, federal prosecutors filed an emergency motion for an arrest warrant and asset freeze against Eleanor Sterling, citing new physical evidence of corporate fraud, obstruction of justice, and criminal conspiracy dating back over thirty years. The legal thunderclap struck the Sterling Corporation before the opening bell of the stock exchange, sending their shares into a catastrophic tailspin.
Back at the grand estate, the morning paper delivery lay unopened on the front steps, bearing a screaming headline that spelled the end of an era. Gregory Sterling stood in the drawing room, staring blankly at the television screen as a news anchor reported the federal raid on the corporate headquarters. The landline telephone rang incessantly, a chorus of panicked board members, angry investors, and investigative reporters demanding answers that no one could provide. Gregory turned slowly toward the master study, his hands shaking as he pushed open the heavy oak door.

Eleanor was sitting behind her mahogany desk, perfectly composed in a charcoal-grey suit, her silver hair styled to absolute perfection. She was pouring tea from a silver pot into a delicate porcelain cup, her movements agonizingly steady despite the earthquake happening outside her windows. "Mother, it's over," Gregory said, his voice cracking with panic. "The federal marshals are freezing all corporate assets. The board has called an emergency vote to strip you of your chairmanship. We are completely ruined." Eleanor did not look up from her tea. She took a slow sip, setting the cup down with a delicate clink against the saucer.
"A Sterling is never ruined, Gregory," Eleanor replied, her voice carrying an eerie, chilling calm. "We simply shed the weak skin and adapt to a harsher climate." Before Gregory could answer, the front double doors of the mansion were pushed open with a heavy thud. Heavy footsteps echoed across the marble foyer, followed by the firm, authoritative voice of the lead federal marshal announcing their presence with a warrant for Eleanor's arrest. Gregory shrank back against the wall, but Eleanor remained seated, her spine ramrod straight as she waited for the inevitable reckoning to cross her threshold.
