Chapter 6: Dawn at the Lake House

The sun was just beginning to paint the eastern sky in bruised shades of purple and gold by the time Arthur’s sedan turned down the long, gravel driveway leading to the family lake house. The sprawling timber-and-glass structure sat quietly among towering pines, overlooking a glassy, mist-shrouded lake that mirrored the tranquility of the surrounding wilderness. For Elena, walking through the front door felt like stepping into an alternate reality where the noise and cruelty of Manhattan could not reach her.

Arthur immediately set about making tea in the spacious country kitchen, moving with quiet efficiency while Elena wrapped herself in a heavy plaid blanket on the oversized leather sofa. The physical exhaustion of the past twenty-four hours was catching up to her, pulling heavy anchors at her limbs, but her mind remained hyper-vigilant, replaying the events of the gala in an endless, looping nightmare. She set her blue satin purse on the coffee table beside her phone, staring at the blank screen as if it might suddenly detonate.

"Drink this," Arthur said softly, returning with a steaming mug of chamomile tea laced with honey. He sat in the armchair opposite her, his expression softening as he looked at his daughter. "You need to sleep, Elena. Whatever comes next starts tomorrow, not today."

"What if he comes looking for me?" Elena asked, wrapping her cold hands around the ceramic mug, drawing warmth from the steam. "Grant hates losing face more than anything. If people are asking questions about where his wife disappeared to mid-party, he's going to make it his mission to drag me back to control the narrative."

"Let him try," Arthur said, taking a slow sip of his own coffee. "This house is private, and our security system is linked directly to the local sheriff's department. More importantly, Grant is a coward wrapped in an expensive suit. Cowards don't launch manhunts; they protect their brand. Right now, he's probably telling everyone at the after-party that you had a sudden migraine or a nervous breakdown. He won't want to admit that you walked out on him because that introduces a variable he can't control."

Elena nodded slowly, recognizing the tactical accuracy of her father’s assessment. Grant was indeed a creature of public perception. Every aspect of his life was curated for maximum social leverage. Admitting that his wife had fled his abuse would shatter the illusion of effortless perfection he had spent a decade cultivating. She took a deep sip of the tea, feeling the warmth spread through her chest, and allowed her head to rest back against the cushions as exhaustion finally pulled her under.
