Chapter 7: The Safehouse

The safehouse was located in a quiet, unassuming coastal town three hours north of the city, far away from the flashing lights of downtown skyscrapers and the prying eyes of the tabloid press. It was a modest, weathered cedar-shingle cottage perched on a rocky bluff overlooking the crashing gray waves of the ocean. Marcus had arranged the hideout through an old college friend who worked in federal witness protection. Inside, the cottage smelled of cedar, salt air, and old books. A small fireplace crackled in the corner, casting a warm, flickering orange glow across the rustic living room.
Clara was currently asleep on a floral print sofa, wrapped in a thick wool blanket, finally catching up on days of lost rest. Elena sat at a small wooden kitchen table, staring blankly out the window at the churning sea as the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in bruised shades of purple and orange. The front door clicked open softly, and Marcus stepped inside, shaking the cold mist from his shoulders. He carried a brown paper bag filled with groceries, placing it quietly on the counter before pouring two mugs of hot black coffee and bringing one over to Elena.
"How is she holding up?" Marcus asked quietly, pulling out a chair and sitting across from her. Elena took the warm ceramic mug between her hands, letting the heat seep into her chilled fingers. "She’s sleeping, which is a blessing," Elena sighed softly, blowing across the surface of the coffee. "She hasn't asked about Julian once. Children have a way of sensing safety; she knows we are away from him." Marcus nodded grimly, stirring sugar into his own mug. "She should feel safe. Julian’s assets are completely frozen, and the SEC has seized his primary servers. He’s cornered."

"A cornered animal is more dangerous than a free one, Marcus," Elena warned, looking directly into his eyes. "Julian has spent twenty years building a network of corrupt politicians and shady international associates. He won't just sit in a jail cell and wait for trial. He’ll try to burn everything down to keep his secrets buried." Marcus ran a hand over his tired face, acknowledging the grim reality of her words. "The feds are moving him to a secure federal holding facility tonight. Without his wealth, he loses his leverage over his associates. They’ll turn on him to save themselves."
Suddenly, the quiet hum of the refrigerator was interrupted by a sharp, electronic chime from Elena’s encrypted burner phone on the table. Both of them froze. Elena reached out slowly, picking up the device. The screen flashed with an incoming call from an unknown, blocked number. She pressed the speakerphone button and answered with a firm, steady voice. "State your business." A raspy, distorted voice echoed through the small kitchen, sending a cold shiver straight down her spine. "You think you've won the game, Mrs. Vance, but the board belongs to us now. Drop the case, or the little girl pays the price." The line went dead with a harsh click.
