Chapter 6: Returning to the Scene of the Crime

The drive back to the estate felt surreal. The stately iron gates, usually a symbol of exclusivity and protection, were now besieged by a chaotic mob of journalists, photographers, and local onlookers pointing camera phones at the grand facade. Arthur kept his head down as his car was waved through the security checkpoint by a harried private guard who recognized his vehicle. The driveway, once lined with expensive imported luxury sedans for last night’s doomed party, was now littered with discarded coffee cups and abandoned press equipment.

Parking near the side entrance, Arthur bypassed the grand foyer entirely, walking directly down the familiar, brightly lit hallway where the confrontation had taken place less than twelve hours earlier. The spilled laundry bags and cascades of white envelopes were still scattered across the floor, untouched, serving as a physical monument to the collapse of an empire. He stepped over the papers, his eyes immediately drawn to the blue door. The heavy padlock hung open from the hasp, the dark blue paint chipped around the keyhole where he had wrenched it open in panic.

He pushed the door open all the way. The small room inside was stark, containing only a small cot, a stack of children’s books, and a faint, stale smell of isolation. Arthur felt a cold shiver run down his spine as he imagined Clara sitting in the dark, listening to the muffled sounds of music and laughter while her grandmother poured champagne for sycophants in the next room. He grabbed the stack of children’s books, clutching them tightly to his chest. These were the simple, irreplaceable treasures that mattered infinitely more than any stock portfolio or inherited title.

"Arthur."

The voice came from the shadows near the end of the hallway. Eleanor stood there, leaning heavily against the wall for support. She had changed out of her party dress into a simple black blouse and slacks, but the transformation was jarring. Without her pearls and carefully applied makeup, she looked every bit her age—small, frail, and utterly defeated. The grand matriarch had been reduced to a ghost haunting the ruins of her own creation.

"I came for Clara’s documents and her things," Arthur said, his voice devoid of anger, carrying only a profound, heavy sadness.

"Are you going to take everything from me?" Eleanor asked, her voice trembling slightly as she stepped into the pale light filtering through the high windows. "Are you going to leave your own mother to face the wolves alone?"
