Chapter 4

The ticking of the grandfather clock seemed to amplify the growing tension within the library. Outside, the rain beat a steady, rhythmic tattoo against the heavy leaded glass of the windows, blurring the lights of the approaching police cruiser as it turned into the long gravel driveway.

Julian stood up abruptly, buttoning the top button of his grey suit jacket. He walked over to the tall window and peered out through the rain-streaked pane. "They’re here," he announced, his voice tight with a mixture of vindication and lingering dread. "Detective Miller and his partner. We need to present the facts clearly before they start asking uncomfortable questions about the estate's overall solvency."

Eleanor adjusted the pearl earrings at her lobes, her fingers steady and deliberate. "Let them ask," she said coolly. "A Vance has nothing to fear from an audit, Julian. It is the parasites who cling to our foundation that should tremble."

Clara stood up from the velvet armchair, the golden robe catching the firelight. The initial shock of the confrontation had worn off, replaced by a cold, hardened defiance. She smoothed the fabric over her hips and walked over to the desk, picking up the crystal wine glass that still bore the smudge of her lipstick.

"You think putting me in handcuffs solves everything, don't you?" Clara asked, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper as she looked directly at Julian. "You think the board will just hand you the chairmanship once I’m out of the picture? You haven't looked at the subsidiary accounts, Julian. You haven't seen what your grandfather really did with the Vance manufacturing division."

Julian frowned, stepping closer to her. "What are you talking about?"

"Ask Maria," Clara replied with a bitter smile, glancing sideways at the maid. "Or better yet, ask your grandmother. Why do you think Julian senior was so desperate to change his will in my favor during his final months? It wasn't because of my charm. It was because I was the only one willing to keep his final secret buried."

Maria’s hand twitched, causing the silver teaspoon on the tray to rattle softly against the saucer. She kept her eyes fixed firmly on the floor, her breathing remaining slow and controlled, though a single bead of sweat traced a path down the side of her neck.

Before Julian could demand an explanation, the heavy oak front doors downstairs chimed with three sharp, authoritative knocks. The official arrival of the law had punctured the insulated bubble of the Vance estate, bringing the outside world crashing into their carefully curated dynasty.

Eleanor looked at Julian with an expression that brooked no further delay. "Answer the door, Julian. Let us get this unpleasantness over with."
