Chapter 14: A Promise Kept

The autumn leaves once again began to turn brilliant shades of amber, crimson, and gold, marking the completion of a full year since the fateful evening at the wrought iron gates of the Sterling estate. The West Virginia mountains were bathed in the soft, ethereal light of a crisp October afternoon.
Katherine sat on the wooden porch swing, a warm woolen blanket draped over her knees, watching two-year-old Chloe toddle across the manicured lawn in pursuit of a floating autumn leaf. The little girl’s joyful laughter rang out through the clear mountain air, a pure, unadulterated sound that chased away any lingering shadows from the past.
Dr. Miller walked out onto the porch carrying two mugs of spiced cider, handing one to Katherine with a warm, affectionate smile. “Can you believe it’s already been a full year since we brought her here?”
Katherine took the mug, inhaling the comforting scent of cinnamon and apple before taking a slow sip. “It feels like both a lifetime ago and only yesterday,” Katherine murmured, her eyes never leaving the little girl on the lawn. “Sometimes I still catch myself scanning the treeline for perimeter threats, expecting the past to come pounding on the door.”
