Chapter 1: The Kitchen Confession

The cold linoleum bit through Thomas’s trousers as he knelt on the floor, holding his eight-year-old son, Leo, whose gray button-up pajamas were twisted and damp with sweat. Leo’s small hands clawed desperately at his own midsection, his face pale, lips trembling as he gasped out words that felt like jagged glass dropped into the quiet house.
“She cut open my stomach, Dad! Something is moving inside me!”
Thomas felt his own breath hitch, a cold spike of adrenaline piercing his chest. Across the bedroom, Sarah stood framed in the doorway, her white silk robe clutched tightly around her as her eyes widened with a terror far deeper than the immediate shock warranted. Her hands pressed against her chest in panic, and the words she breathed carried a chilling weight: “Oh no... not again.”
Before Thomas could demand an explanation, the soft shuffle of rubber-soled shoes announced the presence of the night nurse, a thirty-year-old woman in light blue scrubs whose calm demeanor felt completely out of place in the chaos. She walked steadily into the bedroom, carrying a gray ceramic mug filled with steaming hot chocolate. Leo shrank back against his father, pointing a trembling finger at the newcomer.
“She put something in my hot chocolate.”
The nurse stopped by the bedside table, her face unreadable. She placed the mug down, and the camera of reality seemed to zoom in on her hands. They were steady, entirely too steady, as she picked up a small silver spoon and gently stirred the dark liquid inside the gray mug. The rich, sweet scent of cocoa rose into the air, masking whatever bitter secrets might be dissolved beneath the foam.
“Maybe your son isn’t lying,” the nurse said softly, her voice carrying an eerie calmness that cut through the panic.
Instinct overrode hesitation. Thomas stood up abruptly, his knees cracking in the silent room. He intercepted the gray mug before the nurse could move it further, wrapping both hands around the warm ceramic. His expression hardened into something dangerous and protective. He pulled his smartphone from his pocket, his thumb swiping frantically while locking eyes with the woman in scrubs.
“Nobody touches this cup! Call police!” Thomas shouted into the receiver, his voice echoing off the bedroom walls.

The house felt suddenly vast, transformed from a peaceful suburban home into a crime scene. Sarah collapsed against the doorframe, sliding downward until she sat on the floor, her breathing shallow. The nurse did not run; she merely folded her hands in front of her scrubs and watched Thomas with a gaze that suggested she knew every card in a rigged deck. Leo whimpered on the floor, his hands still pressed tightly to his stomach, where the impossible, invisible movement seemed to pulse beneath his gray cotton pajamas. Thomas kept his back to the wall, guarding the mug like a shield against an invisible enemy.
