Chapter 7

By 8:00 AM, the morning sun had burned away the early mist, casting a harsh, clinical glare across the brick facade of the hospital. Inside Room 402, Clara sat in a padded armchair beside Lily’s bed, dabbing her dry eyes with a lace-trimmed handkerchief as two local police officers stood near the doorway taking notes. She wore a tailored white cashmere cardigan over her nightgown, projecting an image of fragile, grieving motherhood that completely masked the cold ambition driving her actions.

“I’m just so worried about my husband,” Clara said, her voice trembling with manufactured fragility for the benefit of the officers. “He hasn't been himself for months. The stress of Lily’s illness has made him paranoid, aggressive... almost unrecognizable.”

The senior officer, a weathered sergeant named Briggs, nodded sympathetically. “We have units patrolling the perimeter, Mrs. Hayes. If he attempts to violate the restraining order or approach the room again, he will be taken into custody immediately. Your daughter’s safety is our primary concern.”

Across town, inside a quiet conference room at the state medical board offices, Nathan sat beside Dr. Vance as Investigator Marcus Hayes—no relation, despite the shared surname—reviewed the video file from the flash drive. Marcus was a sharp-eyed woman in her late forties with steel-gray hair and an expression carved from granite. She played the footage through three times, watching every frame with intense, unwavering focus.

“The timestamp is immutable, and the cryptographic hash confirms the file hasn't been edited,” Marcus said, turning the laptop screen toward Nathan. “This is an open-and-shut case of Munchausen by proxy escalated to premeditated pharmaceutical assault for financial gain. The foundation funding her trial has already received a preliminary subpoena from my office based on the preliminary banking records you provided earlier.”

“Can we get Lily out of that hospital right now?” Nathan asked, leaning forward across the table, his voice taut with anxiety. “Clara is still in the room with her. Who knows what she might try if she realizes the walls are closing in?”

“The protective custody order was signed by a judge twenty minutes ago,” Marcus replied, standing up and buttoning her blazer. “I have two state troopers and a medical transport team en route to Room 402 right now. We are going to seize Lily, place her in a neutral medical facility under federal guard, and detain Clara for questioning before she even realizes her corporate backers have abandoned her.”

Nathan felt a massive weight lift from his shoulders, though a lingering knot of dread remained in his stomach. “Let’s move. Every minute Lily spends in that room with her is a risk we can’t afford.”
