Chapter 13: Facing the Public

The morning sun reflected sharply off the glass facade of the federal courthouse downtown as Julian stepped out of his vehicle, holding Lily’s small hand securely in his own. Flanked by Captain Miller and two federal marshals, they walked up the wide stone steps toward the press entrance. A sea of reporters, flashing camera lights, and rolling microphones surged forward, eager for a statement on the dismantling of one of the largest corporate corruption rings in the tech sector's history.
Julian raised his free hand to shield Lily’s eyes from the blinding camera flashes, keeping her close against his side. He had decided to make a public statement—not to grandstand or seek vengeance against Clara and Eleanor, but to ensure that the truth about corporate accountability was spoken clearly into the public record.
Stepping up to the podium, Julian adjusted the microphone while Miller gently guided Lily to a quiet, sheltered corner just behind the press barrier where she could color in her sketchbook without distraction. Julian took a deep breath, looking out over the crowd of journalists whose lenses were now pointed at him for an entirely different reason than the night of the storm.
""Two nights ago, my family was targeted by individuals who believed that human lives were simply currency to be traded for corporate leverage,"" Julian began, his voice resonant, calm, and steady. ""They believed that advanced technology and encrypted algorithms could place them above the law and beyond the reach of human decency. They were wrong.""
The cameras clicked furiously, recording every word. Julian did not mention the private details of his daughter’s ordeal, choosing instead to protect her privacy while exposing the broader systemic abuses of the board.
""Technology was created to connect us, to protect us, and to improve our lives—not to be weaponized against our children in the dark,"" Julian continued, looking directly into the primary camera lens. ""Today, the federal indictments filed against the leadership of my former firm mark the end of an era of unaccountable surveillance. But laws and court orders are not enough. We must demand that every engineer, every executive, and every corporation place human dignity above profit margins.""

He paused, letting the weight of his words settle over the gathered press corps. ""To every parent who has ever felt powerless against powerful systems: do not surrender your voice, and do not compromise your core values. Integrity is not a vulnerability; it is our strongest defense.""
With those final words, Julian stepped away from the podium, ignoring the shouted questions from reporters, and walked back to where Lily was waiting for him with a bright, encouraging smile.
