Chapter 4: The Unwelcome Visitor

Twilight bled across the horizon, casting long, distorted shadows through the sheer curtains of the living room. Lily had finally fallen into a restless sleep, her breathing evening out under the watchful eye of a bedside monitor. Mark sat at the kitchen island, a cup of cold black coffee untouched before him, his eyes glued to the security monitor display. The neighborhood was quiet, save for the occasional rustle of oak leaves in the evening breeze.

A sharp knock at the front door shattered the silence.

Mark stood up instantly, his muscles tensing. He didn’t reach for a weapon; he reached for his phone, recording the timestamp as he approached the entryway. Through the peephole, he didn't see Evelyn’s beige suit. Instead, standing on the porch was a middle-aged man in a rumpled charcoal trench coat, holding a thick Manila envelope. Mark unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open half an inch, keeping the chain guard latched.

""Mr. Hayes?"" the man asked, flashing a cracked leather badge. ""My name is Detective Miller, municipal investigations. I need a brief statement regarding this afternoon's incident.""

""You have nothing to discuss with me through a cracked door, Detective,"" Mark said evenly, his voice steady. ""If you have a warrant, produce it. Otherwise, leave my property.""

Detective Miller sighed, sliding a photograph through the gap. It was a picture of the property lines surrounding Mark's house, overlaid with municipal zoning color codes. ""I’m not here on behalf of Evelyn Vance, Mr. Hayes. In fact, Vance’s department is currently under internal review. I’m here because the order used to justify chaining your daughter today was signed under a false docket number.""

Mark’s hand tightened on the edge of the door. ""Explain.""

""The directive requiring quarantine sweeps was decommissioned six months ago,"" Miller said quietly, leaning closer to the door. ""Someone in the upper tiers of the municipal welfare board reactivated it manually this morning, targeting specifically zoned residential parcels. Your property is slated for eminent domain acquisition next quarter. Vance was acting as an enforcement arm for commercial developers, not public health.""

The pieces clicked together with terrifying clarity. The cruelty on the porch wasn't just bureaucratic incompetence; it was a calculated campaign of psychological warfare designed to force the Hayes family out of their home. Mark unlatched the chain, pulling the door wide open. ""Come inside, Detective. It’s time we compare notes.""
