Chapter 11

The following morning, a sleek black town car pulled up to the curb outside the house, but it wasn't Marcus Reed stepping out of the passenger side. Evelyn herself emerged, dressed in an impeccably tailored cream coat and sunglasses, walking up the front path with her usual air of absolute entitlement. She didn't bother knocking; she simply twisted the brass doorknob, expecting it to turn. It held firm against the deadbolt. A sharp, impatient knock rattled the wood.

Julian walked down the hallway at a slow, deliberate pace, unlocking the door and pulling it wide open.

Evelyn dropped her hand, her sunglasses sliding down the bridge of her nose as she stared at him with undisguised fury. "Julian. Open this door immediately and let me speak to your mother. You are making a catastrophic mistake that will ruin whatever is left of her remaining years."

Julian didn't move an inch. He stood blocking the threshold, his expression entirely neutral, radiating the calm stillness of a soldier holding a fortified position. "Evelyn. You're trespassing."

"Trespassing?" Evelyn scoffed, stepping closer to the threshold, her voice rising in shrill disbelief. "I hold the legal guardianship and the pending title transfer for this property. Your mother signed away her rights voluntarily. The police will have you in cuffs within twenty minutes if you don't step aside."

"Call them," Julian said quietly.

Evelyn froze, her hand hovering in the air. She stared at Julian's eyes, looking for the flicker of doubt or intimidation that she was accustomed to seeing in people she manipulated. She found nothing.

"Mr. Reed tried to warn you," Evelyn hissed, lowering her voice as she leaned in close. "You don't understand the people you're fighting. We own every zoning board member from here to the state capital. You can't win this."

"You used to own them," a calm, authoritative voice echoed from behind Julian.

Detective Sarah Ortiz stepped out from the living room, holding a crisp white document bearing the state seal. She walked up beside Julian, flashing a laminated badge directly into Evelyn's line of sight. "Evelyn Vance? I'm Detective Ortiz with the state department of financial protection. You are formally served with a stop-work and asset freeze order regarding Meridian Holdings, along with a criminal summons for elder financial abuse and wire fraud."

Evelyn’s face drained of all color. The polished, untouchable composure she had worn like armor shattered instantly. She stared at the badge, then at the document in Ortiz's hand, her breath catching in her throat.

"This is a mistake," Evelyn stammered, taking a involuntary step back down the porch steps. "A routine civil misunderstanding. My lawyers will—"

"Your lawyers are currently being served with federal search warrants at your corporate offices downtown," Ortiz interrupted smoothly, pulling a pair of handcuffs from her belt loop with practiced ease. "And your brother-in-law at the municipal zoning office has already started singing about the routing number alterations. You're done, Evelyn."
