Chapter 3: The Arrival of Law

The heavy oak doors swung fully open, admitting a chilling draft that contrasted sharply with the stifling heat of the crowded ballroom. Detective Marcus Vance—no relation to Clara, despite the shared surname—strode into the room with unhurried authority. His dark trench coat brushed against the polished floor as he walked with the measured cadence of a man who owned the very ground he stepped on. The murmurs among the wedding guests died down instantly, replaced by a tense, breathless silence.

Julian’s knees nearly buckled. He reached out blindly, grabbing the edge of the champagne table to steady himself as silver flutes clattered and tipped over, spilling amber liquid across the pristine linen.

Detective Vance stopped ten paces away from the altar setup, his sharp eyes taking in the bizarre tableau: the bride in her immaculate gown, the groom in his terror-stricken tuxedo, and the bruised, determined young woman holding the sacred document binder.

"Detective," Victoria said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness as she forced a diplomatic smile, though her jaw remained clenched. "I am glad you’re here. There’s been a severe disruption. This unauthorized individual has trespassed into a private ceremony and is attempting to disrupt a legally binding union with fraudulent claims."

Detective Vance did not even look at the bride. He kept his gaze locked on Julian, pulling a thick manila folder from beneath his coat.

"Julian Montgomery, you are being detained for questioning regarding grand larceny, corporate identity theft, and the falsification of probate documents concerning the Vance Estate," the detective announced, his voice carrying clearly to every corner of the vast ballroom.

A collective gasp swept through the crowd, louder this time, accompanied by the frantic clicking of camera shutters as reporters in the back rows began recording the scene.

Julian shook his head frantically, his hands flying up in a defensive gesture. "This is a mistake! There’s a civil dispute, sure, but criminal charges? This is an administrative misunderstanding orchestrated by a bitter relative!"

"It’s no misunderstanding, Julian," Clara said, stepping forward so she stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the detective. She held out the binder to Vance, who accepted it with a gloved hand, securing the primary evidence. "I spent the last forty-eight hours with the state prosecutor's economic crimes division. Every single asset transfer you initiated after my father's death has been flagged."

Victoria whirled around to face Julian, her face contorted in sudden rage and betrayal. "What is she talking about? You swore to me the title was clean! You said her father left everything to you in a codicil!"

"Victoria, listen to me, I can explain—" Julian stammered, stepping toward her, but she recoiled as if he were carrying a plague.

"Don't touch me!" Victoria screamed, the high-pitched veneer of aristocratic grace finally shattering completely. Her carefully pinned blonde updo began to unspool as she shook her head in sheer disbelief. "You told me this hotel was going to be our wedding gift to each other. You told me we were invincible."

"We were," Julian muttered miserably, his shoulders slumping in total defeat.

Detective Vance signaled two uniformed officers who followed him into the room. They stepped past the bewildered guests, moving purposefully toward the groom. The cold reality of the situation settled over the Grand Azure ballroom. The wedding was officially over.
