Chapter 6: Ms. Hayes

Sarah Hayes was a teacher who noticed the quiet kids. She saw Lily’s flinches, her hesitation to speak, and the way her father—a large, intimidating man—looked at the world like a war zone.
During a parent-teacher conference, Sarah looked Vance in the eye. ""She's brilliant, Mr. Miller. But she's carrying something heavy.""
Vance stiffened. ""We've had a hard year.""
""I’m not prying,"" Sarah said softly. ""I just want you to know this is a safe place. For both of you."" It was the first time someone had offered Vance grace without wanting something in return. He nodded, a lump forming in his throat.
