Chapter 10

The heavy oak doors of the private study slammed shut, locking automatically behind Eleanor as she herded the boys and Arthur inside. The room was shrouded in deep shadows, illuminated only by the amber glow of a single banker’s lamp sitting on the mahogany desk. Eleanor stood with her back to the locked door, her gold satin blazer catching the dim light, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. She pointed a trembling finger at the metal cylinder in Lucas’s hands. "Give that to me right now," she commanded, her voice stripped of its usual regal authority, revealing the frantic panic of a cornered predator. Arthur stepped in front of the boys, shielding them with his broad frame. "Back off, Eleanor. You’re not touching them."

Lucas clutched the cylinder tighter, stepping around his uncle’s side. "We read the letters, Grandma. We heard the tapes," Lucas said, his eight-year-old voice remarkably steady. "You lied about Grandpa. You lied about why Clara was arrested." Eleanor’s eyes flashed with a dangerous fury. She took a step forward, her hand reaching into her pocket. "Clara is a criminal who manipulated you! She poisoned your minds against this family!" Arthur let out a harsh, bitter laugh. "The only one who poisoned this family is you, sitting atop a mountain of stolen money and forged documents." With a sudden, decisive movement, Arthur reached out and placed the microcassettes onto the desk, inserting the top tape into an old transcription player he had spotted nearby.

The room fell dead silent as the mechanical heads engaged. A harsh, static-filled audio recording began to play through the small built-in speaker. “If the board discovers the asset transfers, Eleanor, we’re both finished,” a man’s voice—unmistakably the late patriarch, Richard Sterling—spoke clearly through the tape. “I am rewriting the trust tomorrow to transfer control directly to the philanthropic foundation managed by Clara. She’s the only one with the integrity to see it through.” A second voice, cold and sharp, immediately followed: “You’ll do no such thing, Richard. The empire stays with the bloodline, even if I have to remove you from the equation to secure it.” The tape clicked off with a sharp metallic snap. Eleanor stood frozen against the door, the color completely drained from her face, as the inescapable audio evidence of her past crimes echoed in the very room where they had been committed.
