The weeks that followed were a whirlwind of quiet transformation. True to his word, Arthur dismantled his corporate life piece by piece. He resigned his partnership at Sterling & Vance, liquidated a significant portion of his personal investments, and redirected the capital into a newly established trust fund dedicated to sustainable, dignified transitional housing for the city's displaced families. The municipal housing commission, faced with the overwhelming legal documentation Arthur provided, was forced to halt the east side demolitions and initiate a comprehensive reform of their urban renewal protocols.

Inside the thirty-second-floor apartment, the atmosphere shifted from one of cautious refuge to a genuine, lived-in home. Clara’s health rebounded dramatically under Dr. Hayes’s care and the steady, nourishing rhythm of their days together. The bruised hollows beneath her eyes were entirely gone, replaced by a soft, radiant glow, and the olive utility jacket was packed away in a box at the back of the closet, a relic of a past that felt increasingly like a distant nightmare.

One evening, as the sun dipped below the harbor, painting the sky in shades of amber and violet, Clara stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, resting both hands on her heavily protruding stomach. The baby was due any day now.
