Chapter 6

The executive boardroom on the top floor of the Sterling Enterprises tower was a cathedral of corporate power. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls offered a panoramic view of the skyline beneath a slate-gray morning sky. Twelve members of the board of directors sat around the massive mahogany conference table, murmuring anxiously among themselves. Richard stood at the head of the table, looking every bit the ruthless captain of industry in his immaculate black suit, projecting an aura of absolute control.

When the heavy double doors swung open, all eyes turned. Eleanor walked in first, her emerald pendant catching the fluorescent lights, radiating an unshakeable dignity. Right behind her walked Maya, wearing her beige hoodie, carrying her acoustic guitar case in one hand and the manila envelope in the other.

Richard’s face tightened into a mask of cold fury. "Guards, remove this trespasser immediately. This is a private corporate meeting, not a public charity audition."

"Sit down, Richard," Eleanor commanded, her voice ringing with an authority that brooked no argument. She took her seat at the opposite end of the table, gesturing for Maya to sit beside her.

One of the senior board members, a gray-haired man named Arthur Vance, adjusted his glasses and looked uneasily at Richard. "Richard, the press outside is asking questions about an adoption fraud claim tied to your family name. We need a formal statement before the market opens in twenty minutes."

"It's a malicious hoax engineered by an opportunistic street performer looking for a payout," Richard barked, slamming his palm onto the table. "She broke into my estate, stole personal documents, and is attempting corporate extortion."

Maya calmly unzipped her guitar case, but instead of pulling out the instrument, she lifted the manila envelope Marcus had given her, along with her tablet containing the digital scans of the grandfather’s diary. She stood up, her posture straight, her eyes fixed directly on Arthur Vance and the rest of the board.

"Extortion implies I'm asking for money," Maya said, her voice clear and resonant in the hushed room. "I'm not asking for a single cent of Sterling Enterprises. I'm here for the truth."

Richard lunged forward, his face draining of color. "Don't listen to her! Security, drag her out!"

Before anyone could move, Maya reached into her pocket and placed a small digital recorder on the center of the conference table, pressing play. The tinny, amplified sound of a telephone recording filled the silent boardroom, playing the unmistakable voice of a younger Richard Sterling orchestrating the falsification of a newborn child's medical records.
