Chapter 1: The Standoff

The fluorescent lights of the underground parking garage flickered, casting long, harsh shadows across the concrete. Officer Briggs, his hand still frozen on the Federal Police badge, slowly looked up.
The man in the sharp black suit, Special Agent Arthur Vance, didn't yell. He didn't have to. The quiet, cold authority radiating from him was heavier than a loaded weapon. He took a slow step forward, the red and blue reflections from the SUVs dancing across his stoic face.
""I asked you a question,"" Arthur said, his voice a low, gravelly hum that echoed off the concrete. ""Do you have a problem with my daughter?""
Briggs swallowed hard. The aggressive swagger he had shown just moments ago evaporated. ""Agent Vance,"" Briggs stammered, recognizing the name of the regional director of the Federal Anti-Trafficking Task Force. ""I... I was conducting a routine stop. She was loitering.""
""Loitering,"" Arthur repeated, his eyes shifting briefly to Maya. She was still pinned against the pillar, clutching her backpack, her chest heaving. Arthur’s jaw tightened. ""Step away from her. Now.""
Briggs quickly backed up, raising his hands in a placating gesture. Maya immediately ran to Arthur, burying her face into his coat. Arthur wrapped a protective arm around her shoulders, his gaze never leaving the corrupt local cop.
""If you ever approach her again,"" Arthur said, his voice dropping to a whisper that cut through the silence like glass, ""you won't have a badge to hide behind.""

Arthur turned and guided Maya toward the lead SUV. As the convoy sped away, leaving Briggs standing alone in the damp garage, Maya looked at her father. ""You came,"" she whispered.
""Always, Maya,"" Arthur replied softly. ""But you need to tell me why you were investigating a dirty cop on your own.""
