Chapter 6: The Arrival

The crunch of gravel in the driveway announced the arrival of Margaret’s car before the engine had even fully cut out. Clara rushed to the front window, parting the sheer curtains just enough to see her mother’s beige sedan parked haphazardly behind Mark’s truck. Margaret stepped out of the vehicle with a hurried urgency that felt entirely unnatural for her usual composed demeanor. She wore her characteristic white button-down shirt and beige pants, but her hair was slightly disheveled, and her posture was rigid as she strode toward the front door.

Before Clara could reach the handle, the front door swung open. Margaret had used her spare key.

"Where is it?" Margaret demanded, stepping into the foyer, her eyes darting past Clara straight toward the living room. Her chest heaved slightly as if she had run the entire length of the path.

"Mom, calm down," Clara said, closing the front door behind her. "Tell us what is going on. What is under this house?"

Margaret ignored her daughter, walking quickly across the hardwood floor until she reached the edge of the large area rug. When her eyes fell upon the open trapdoor and the rusted metal box resting beside it, all the color drained instantly from her face. She stumbled back a half-step, catching herself against the back of the living room sofa, her hands trembling uncontrollably.

"You actually opened it," Margaret whispered, her voice cracking with profound dread. "You fools. You had no right disturbing the earth here."

Mark stepped out from the hallway, setting the heavy crowbar down on a side table to keep his hands visibly empty. His tone was firm, demanding answers. "Margaret, stop with the dramatics. Explain what this box is. It has a modern lock on it. Someone has been accessing this crawlspace since we bought the place. Was it you? Did you come onto our property?"

"No," Margaret snapped, her eyes flashing with genuine anger and fear. She looked at Mark as if he were a stranger who had accidentally triggered a bomb. "None of us have set foot down there in thirty years. We thought the concrete slab sealed it forever when the developers cleared the topsoil. We thought the secret was safe beneath the foundation."

"What secret, Mom?" Clara stepped closer, her voice rising in desperation. "Every minute you waste keeping secrets is another minute we're sitting blindly in danger. Lily is in the other room, for heaven's sake! Tell us the truth!"

Margaret closed her eyes, taking a long, shuddering breath as she gathered the scattered pieces of her composure. She walked slowly toward the edge of the open hatch, staring down into the dark cavity as if ghosts of the past were staring right back up at her.
