THE TRAITOR'S EMBRACE AND THE WIFE'S DEADLY DIAMOND

The dense London fog rolled off the River Thames, wrapping the ultra-exclusive Chelsea penthouse in a blanket of grey. Eleanor Vance, thirty-three, a ruthless corporate liquidator, stood perfectly still in the shadowy foyer of her own home. She had returned from a business trip in Frankfurt two days early.

She could hear the soft, romantic jazz echoing from the grand living room, mingling with the clinking of crystal glasses.

Eleanor silently took off her trench coat. She walked down the marble hallway, her footsteps completely muffled by the plush carpets. She peered around the corner into the living room.

Standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows, bathed in the amber light of the chandelier, was her husband, Marcus. Marcus was a high-end art dealer whose extravagant lifestyle was entirely funded by Eleanor’s massive corporate salary. Wrapped tightly in his arms, her head resting on his chest in a deeply intimate embrace, was a beautiful, twenty-three-year-old blonde woman. It was Sophia, Marcus's newest gallery assistant.

"I can't wait until she's out of the picture," Sophia whispered, tracing a finger down Marcus’s jawline. "We take the money, we move to Florence, and you never have to look at that miserable, controlling workaholic again."

Marcus kissed her forehead. "Just a few more days, darling. I have the asset secured. Once it's sold on the black market, we vanish."

Eleanor didn't politely clear her throat. She didn't cry. A fiery, blinding rage exploded in her chest, but it was quickly overshadowed by a dark, terrifying clarity.

"Marcus!" Eleanor shrieked, shattering the romantic atmosphere.

Marcus spun around, dropping his crystal glass. It shattered on the marble floor. His face turned the color of ash. "Eleanor! My god, you're in Germany—"

Eleanor didn't let him finish. She sprinted across the massive living room like a wild predator. She didn't aim for her husband; she lunged directly at Sophia.

"You little parasite!" Eleanor screamed, violently grabbing Sophia by the collar of her expensive cashmere coat. She threw the young girl backward. Sophia stumbled, shrieking in terror as Eleanor delivered a vicious, ringing slap across her cheek. The two women crashed into the velvet sofa, a chaotic whirlwind of grabbing hands and screaming.

"Eleanor, stop! Are you insane?!" Marcus yelled, rushing forward and violently pulling his wife off the weeping mistress. He pushed Eleanor back, standing protectively in front of Sophia.

Sophia clutched her red, stinging cheek. But as she realized Marcus was defending her, her terror vanished. A smug, deeply arrogant sneer twisted her face. She stepped out from behind Marcus, puffing her chest out.

"Are you done throwing your little tantrum?" Sophia spat, her voice dripping with venom. "Look at you. You're pathetic. Marcus doesn't want you. He’s leaving you for me. We are taking the money and flying to Italy, and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it!"

Marcus looked terrified. "Sophia, shut up! Don't say anything else!"

Eleanor stood up slowly, smoothing the wrinkles out of her sharp designer blazer. The hysterical, enraged wife from five seconds ago completely vanished. Her breathing steadied. Her eyes grew completely dead and cold. She let out a soft, chilling laugh.

"Italy is beautiful this time of year," Eleanor whispered, tilting her head. "But I'm afraid your itinerary has just changed."

Sophia frowned, confused by the sudden shift. "What are you talking about?"

"Marcus," Eleanor said, walking over to the bar to pour herself a drink. "Did you really think I didn't know you stole the 'Crimson Tear' diamond from the Russian syndicate's private vault yesterday? You thought you could fence a twenty-million-dollar stolen blood diamond, run away with your little assistant, and frame me for the theft?"

Marcus’s blood turned to ice. His arrogant posture collapsed. "How... how do you know about the syndicate?"

"I know," Eleanor smiled, taking a sip of scotch, "because their enforcers are currently in the elevator, coming up to this exact penthouse to retrieve their property and kill the thief."

Sophia laughed nervously. "You're lying! Marcus has the diamond in the wall safe! We are perfectly fine!"

"Oh, the wall safe?" Eleanor raised an eyebrow, stepping closer to the young, arrogant mistress. "Are you sure about that, Sophia? You see, the physical altercation we just had wasn't because my heart was broken. It was a sleight of hand."

Sophia’s breath hitched. She slowly, shakily reached her hand into the deep pocket of her cashmere coat. Her fingers brushed against something hard, cold, and jagged. She pulled it out.

Resting in Sophia’s trembling palm was a massive, flawless red diamond.

"I grabbed it from the safe ten minutes ago," Eleanor whispered, her voice like a razor blade. "And when I tackled you onto the sofa, I slipped it right into your pocket."

Marcus fell to his knees in sheer terror, weeping uncontrollably as the reality of the situation crushed him.

"You see, Sophia," Eleanor said, walking toward the private back exit of the penthouse. "The Russian syndicate doesn't ask questions. They just shoot whoever is holding their diamond. Have a wonderful trip to hell."

Right on cue, the heavy steel doors of the private elevator chimed. As heavy, terrifying footsteps echoed into the foyer, Eleanor slipped out the back door, leaving her cheating husband and his arrogant mistress to face the absolute wrath of the cartel.
