THE PRICE OF A STOLEN DIAMOND AND THE WIFE'S LETHAL TRAP

The thunderstorm rattling the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Chicago penthouse matched the cold, violent rhythm of Evelyn’s heart. In her trembling hand, she held a crumpled piece of thermal paper she had just pulled from the inner pocket of her husband’s custom Armani suit. It was a receipt from an exclusive jeweler in Geneva.

Item: The 'Tears of Aphrodite' Diamond Choker.

Price: $450,000.

Date: Yesterday.

Tonight was their tenth wedding anniversary. At 8:00 PM, Marcus walked through the front door, shaking the rain from his umbrella and flashing his signature, arrogant million-dollar smile. He was a high-profile portfolio manager, a man who commanded boardrooms and lived for luxury. He walked up to Evelyn and handed her a small, velvet box.

"Happy anniversary, my queen," Marcus said smoothly, kissing her forehead. "I spared absolutely no expense for you."

Evelyn slowly opened the box. Inside was a generic, thin gold bracelet that couldn't have cost more than five hundred dollars.

"It's beautiful," Evelyn lied, her voice as smooth as silk, though a venomous rage began to boil in her veins.

"I have an urgent late-night conference call with the European investors," Marcus sighed, adjusting his tie and heading toward his private study. "I'll be busy for the next hour."

But Evelyn knew there was no conference call. She had already checked the building's security cameras on her tablet. A young, blonde woman—Marcus's twenty-three-year-old secretary, Mia—was currently waiting in the VIP lobby downstairs.

Instead of screaming, crying, or throwing the cheap bracelet at his face, Evelyn walked over to her wall safe. She didn't pull out a gun. She pulled out a heavily encrypted black satellite phone.

You see, Marcus believed he was the absolute master of his hedge fund. He thought his wife was just a beautiful, passive socialite who spent his money. He didn't know that the primary "European investor" he managed offshore accounts for was actually the Volkov Syndicate, a ruthless, bloodthirsty Russian mafia family. And Evelyn? Evelyn wasn't just a socialite. Before they met, she was a shadow accountant. She was the Volkovs' primary fixer, the woman who secretly washed their money through Marcus’s firm without him ever knowing the true source of his wealth.

An hour later, the heavy mahogany doors of Marcus’s study were shut. He was pouring himself a glass of vintage scotch, laughing on his phone, whispering sweet promises to Mia about a future in Paris.

Suddenly, the double doors violently swung open.

Marcus spun around, anger flashing across his face. "Evelyn, I told you I was on a—"

His voice completely died in his throat. The glass of scotch slipped from his fingers, shattering into a hundred pieces on the marble floor.

Evelyn walked into the study, looking like an absolute queen of death in her black evening gown. Behind her stood Mia. The young secretary was violently sobbing, her mascara running down her pale cheeks, completely paralyzed with fear. And resting heavily around Mia's neck was the $450,000 diamond choker.

But Mia wasn't alone. Standing right behind the weeping girl were two massive, heavily scarred men in dark tactical suits, their faces devoid of any human emotion.

"Evelyn..." Marcus choked out, backing up against his desk, his legs shaking. "What is going on? Who are these men?"

Mia sobbed uncontrollably, pointing a trembling finger at Marcus. "He told me he was single! He gave me the necklace in the lobby and said we were leaving tonight! Please, let me go!"

Evelyn ignored the girl. She calmly walked over and trailed a single, sharp manicured fingernail over the glittering diamonds resting on Mia’s neck. "It really is a stunning piece of jewelry, Marcus. But you made one fatal miscalculation."

Evelyn reached into her dress and tossed a black financial ledger directly onto Marcus's desk.

"You used the Cayman offshore account to buy it," Evelyn whispered, her voice dropping to a terrifying, icy chill. "The shadow account belonging to Mr. Volkov."

Marcus stopped breathing. His arrogant facade crumbled instantly. His face turned a sickly, translucent white as the terrifying realization hit him. "No... no, I transferred that money... I was going to replace it tomorrow... Evelyn, how do you know about Volkov?!"

"You stole half a million dollars from the Russian mob to buy a shiny toy for your secretary," Evelyn said, stepping back and giving him a smile that offered zero mercy. "Mr. Volkov does not forgive embezzlement. And he certainly doesn't like his shadow accountant's husband stealing from him."

Marcus fell to his knees. The wealthy, untouchable banker was gone, replaced by a pathetic, weeping coward. "Evelyn, please! They'll kill me! You have to help me! I'm your husband!"

Evelyn looked down at him, her eyes completely empty. "You were my husband, Marcus. Now, you are just a debt to be collected." She turned to the two massive enforcers. "He's all yours."
