THE LITTLE GIRL I FOUND ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD HAD MY DEAD DAUGHTER’S FACE — AND SHE CALLED ME “MAMA”

The highway outside of Denver, Colorado was nearly empty that cold December evening. Dr. Sophia Bennett was driving back from a medical conference when she saw the small figure standing on the shoulder of the road.
At first she thought it was a lost dog. Then her headlights caught the shape of a little girl, no older than six, standing alone in the snow wearing only a thin pink sweater.
Sophia slammed on the brakes.
She got out of the car, heart pounding. “Sweetheart? Are you lost?”
The little girl turned around.
Sophia’s world stopped.
The child had the exact same face as her daughter Lily — the same dark curls, the same small birthmark above her left eyebrow, the same serious brown eyes. Lily had died in a car accident three years earlier. Sophia had held her hand as she took her last breath.
But this child was standing right in front of her, very much alive.
“Are you my mama?” the little girl asked quietly.
Sophia couldn’t speak. She could barely breathe.
She wrapped the child in her coat and got her into the warm car. The girl said her name was “Lily” and that she had been walking for a long time. She didn’t know where her “other mama” was.
That night, Sophia took her to the hospital for a check-up. While the nurses ran tests, Sophia sat in the hallway shaking.
Three days later, the DNA results came back.
The little girl was not a stranger.
She was Lily’s identical twin.
Three years ago, Sophia had given birth to twin girls. One of them — the one she named Lily — had survived the difficult birth but was very weak. The other twin had been declared stillborn and taken away immediately by the hospital staff.
Except she hadn’t been stillborn.
Someone at the hospital had stolen her.
For three years, Sophia’s second daughter had been raised by a woman who had lost her own child and couldn’t let go. When that woman died suddenly, the little girl had somehow found her way back to the highway near her real mother’s home.
Sophia sat beside the hospital bed, holding the hand of the daughter she never knew existed, tears streaming down her face.

She had lost one daughter.
But somehow, against every law of nature and probability, she had been given the other one back.
