I CORNERED MY HUSBAND’S ARROGANT MISTRESS IN A LUXURY BOUTIQUE TO DELIVER A BRUTAL BEATING—UNTIL SHE DROPPED A FOLDER THAT PROVED HE WAS PLANNING MY FUNERAL.

The freezing December wind of Aspen, Colorado, howling down Galena Street was nothing compared to the blizzard of rage spinning inside Beatrix Thornton’s chest. At thirty-four, Beatrix was the sole heiress to a massive pharmaceutical empire, a woman who had spent the last six years building a seemingly picture-perfect life with her charismatic husband, Nolan. But that illusion had shattered thirty minutes ago when her private banking app flagged a $25,000 charge at Valerius, the most exclusive diamond and high-fashion boutique in the winter resort town.

Nolan had claimed he was stuck in a board meeting back in Chicago. Yet, as Beatrix stood outside the frosted, floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the boutique, her breath pluming in the icy air, she saw the undeniable, sickening truth.

Standing beneath the glittering crystal chandeliers of the store was a stunning, younger woman with flowing auburn hair, draped in a lavish white fox-fur trimmed ski coat. But it wasn't the coat that made Beatrix’s blood boil until she saw red. Around the woman’s graceful neck sparkled the Empress Sapphire—an antique diamond and sapphire pendant that had belonged to Beatrix’s late mother. Nolan had told her only two days ago that he had taken it to the jeweler for a routine clasp cleaning.

He hadn't cleaned it. He had gifted her mother’s legacy to his mistress.

A suffocating wave of primal jealousy and betrayal hijacked Beatrix’s nervous system. She didn't call her lawyer. She didn't call Nolan. She pushed open the heavy brass doors of Valerius, ignoring the warm blast of scented air and the polite greetings of the security guards. Her tailored designer boots clicked sharply against the imported Italian marble floor like a ticking time bomb.

She marched directly toward the women's VIP lounge, where the mistress was admiring herself in a gilded three-way mirror, holding three glossy shopping bags stamped with Nolan’s private account number.

"You look absolutely thrilling in my mother's jewelry," Beatrix said, her voice dropping to a venomous, trembling whisper that cut through the soft ambient jazz of the boutique.

The woman froze, her reflection eyes widening as she slowly turned around. "Excuse me? Who are you?"

"I am the wife," Beatrix snarled.

Before the younger woman could utter another syllable, years of suppressed compromises, lies, and the sheer indignity of the betrayal snapped within Beatrix. Channelling every ounce of her fury, Beatrix lunged forward. She grabbed the lapel of the woman's expensive coat, spun her forcefully against the velvet display table, and raised her right hand, ready to deliver a physical beating that would leave a permanent mark on the homewrecker's face.

"You like spending my husband's money, you parasite?" Beatrix screamed, raising her palm to strike. "How dare you wear my necklace!"

With a violent shove, Beatrix slammed her palm across the woman’s cheek. The sound was sharp, echoing through the boutique like a whip crack. The impact sent the mistress stumbling backward into the display display rack. Her designer shopping bags slipped from her manicured grasp, ripping open as they crashed onto the polished marble floor.

Gasps erupted from the boutique staff. A security guard started running toward them from the front entrance. Beatrix stood over the trembling woman, chest heaving, ready to strike again.

"Hit me again if it makes you feel better, Beatrix!" the woman gasped, holding her reddened cheek, tears springing to her eyes. But there was no malice in her voice—only sheer, desperate terror. "Hit me all you want! But if you go back to that mountain chalet tonight, your husband is going to kill you!"

Beatrix’s hand froze in mid-air. "What did you just say to me?"

"Look at the floor!" the woman choked out, pointing a shaking finger at the contents that had spilled from the torn shopping bags.

Beatrix looked down. Expecting to see silk lingerie or cash receipts, her brow furrowed in utter confusion. Sprawled across the marble tiles were dozens of high-resolution surveillance photographs, legal documents, and a thick, stamped manila folder.

Slowly, Beatrix lowered her arm and knelt on the icy-cold marble. She picked up the top document. It was a newly underwritten, accelerated life insurance policy issued three weeks ago. The insured party was Beatrix Thornton. The payout was forty million dollars. The sole beneficiary was Nolan.

Beneath the policy were photographs of Beatrix’s personal winter SUV parked in the chalet's garage, along with detailed handwritten mechanical notes on how to sever the brake lines without triggering the vehicle's onboard diagnostic sensors. The handwriting was unmistakably Nolan's.

The room seemed to spin out of control. Beatrix felt the oxygen vanish from her lungs. She looked up at the woman cowering against the velvet display. "Who... who are you? Why do you have this?"

"My name is Sienna Blake," the woman whispered, trembling as she pulled herself up. "I'm an investigative forensic auditor. Your late father’s estate trustees hired me six months ago because they suspected Nolan was secretly siphoning millions from your trust fund into offshore accounts."

Sienna touched her bruised cheek, her voice breaking with emotion. "To get the hard proof, I went undercover. I let him seduce me. I let him think I was just another greedy girl he could impress with stolen wealth. But last night, I found his private digital vault. Beatrix... he has drowning in illicit gambling debts to a cartel in Chicago. If he doesn't pay them by tomorrow morning, they will kill him. His only way out is your death."

"And the necklace?" Beatrix whispered, a single tear of horror tracing down her cold cheek.

"He gave it to me an hour ago to pawn at the black-market dealer on Main Street for instant cash so he could flee the country after you drive off the mountain tonight," Sienna said, gathering the scattered documents. "I came to this store to use his card to trigger a financial fraud alert—I needed to get your attention before you got into that car. I was trying to save your life!"

Beatrix looked at the woman she had just physically assaulted. The shame and horror of her misunderstanding washed over her, instantly replaced by a cold, crystalline resolve. Nolan was not just a cheating husband; he was a predator who had planned to bury her in the snow.

Beatrix reached out, her trembling hand grasping Sienna's, helping her stand completely upright.

"I am so sorry, Sienna," Beatrix said, her voice stabilizing into a chilling, unbreakable steel. "Did you call the authorities yet?"

"The FBI and the Aspen police are waiting two blocks away," Sienna nodded, taking a deep breath. "They just needed me to confirm the location of the pawned jewelry and the forged insurance signatures."

Beatrix unclasped the Empress Sapphire from around Sienna’s neck and wrapped her own hand tightly around the gems. She looked toward the frosted glass doors of the boutique, where the heavy mountain snow was falling faster now, burying the old world beneath a fresh, clean layer of white.

"Let's not keep them waiting," Beatrix said, linking her arm through the woman who had risked everything to save her. "It is time to give my husband the anniversary present he truly deserves
