Margaret Ellison never expected the phone call that changed everything.
Her husband Daniel had been in a serious car accident on the highway outside Chicago. For three weeks she stayed by his hospital bed, feeding him, helping him walk again, canceling all her own plans.
One night, while Daniel was sleeping, his phone rang. The screen showed “Elena – Do not answer”.
Margaret stared at it. When Daniel woke, she asked calmly who Elena was.
He said she was a colleague from work.
But Margaret had already seen the messages. Hundreds of them. Photos. Voice notes. Plans for a future together in California.
Elena was not a colleague. She was the woman Daniel had been building a life with for almost two years — while Margaret paid the mortgage, cooked his meals, and now nursed him back to health.
When Daniel was discharged, Margaret drove him home in silence. She helped him into the house, made him comfortable on the couch, and then placed his phone on the coffee table.
“I read the messages,” she said. “All of them.”
Daniel tried to sit up. “Margaret, it’s not—”
She raised a hand. “I don’t want explanations. I want you out of this house by the end of the week. I’ve already spoken to a lawyer. Because I was the one who took care of you after the accident, the court will likely favor me in the division of assets. Especially since I have proof you were planning to leave me for Elena anyway.”
Daniel’s face went white. “You can’t do this while I’m still recovering.”
“I can,” Margaret said. “And I will. You used me as your safety net while you built a new life with someone else. Now you can go build it without my money or my care.”
She walked to the door, then turned back.
